Sheffield is a small city in Yorkshire, one hour from Manchester. The University there represents half of the city and is famous for its huge Students’ Union, the largest in the UK. It offers many activities daily to students: parties, sports, volunteering… During our visit, they were electing the new student officers and every candidate was campaigning during lunch time distributing leaflets, making choreographies or animations. For our last night we went to their Results’ Party, where the atmosphere was even crazier than for National elections ! We attended several lectures in the Mechanical Engineering department as well, to compare them with the French educational system. During our two weeks there, we also had time to discover the countryside such as Peak District, and some of us even made excursions to York and Liverpool.

Ok, so, speaking a little about Glasgow… Pretty town, cheap, nice pubs, great guys to know, girls, a lot of things to see in Scotland, for not much money.
Plane flight from Geneva, with Easy jet. We really enjoyed the trip, it wasn’t expensive at all and we had great fun. You should see Inverness and Edinburgh, these are beautiful cities.

In England, in the heart of the East Midlands lies a city well-known thanks to the legendary hero Robin Hood : Welcome to Nottingham !
Nottingham is a city steeped in history. You will walk in Sherwood forest, visit the castle which was the property of the Sheriff of Nottingham, see Robin Hood’s statue and open your eyes wide in the Wollaton Hall a beautiful natural history museum.
Nottingham university is huge and very modern. The campus is perfect to laze on grass under trees when it is sunny – Yes ! sometimes in England the sun shines. ^^
Nottingham city centre is very attractive with its Ferris wheel and malls. At night, you can go out in pubs and nightclubs. The oldest in in England, the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, is located also in this city. It is a very nice place where you can taste the beer and so discover a part of the local culture. Night in Nottingham is great !
Then, when you wake up in the morning, what a pleasure to enjoy an authentic English breakfast ! A new day in Nottingham begins !

First of all, it is 2 unforgiven weeks that you will not regret ! I mean, imagine : 2 weeks where you are totally submerged in the spirit of an English country. If you want to do one semester (or more) during your degree course at INSA, it can be a good first experience.
My SCAN trip was in Nottingham from the 19th of February to the 6th of March. After one hour of fly, we touched the English floor at Stansted and surprise ! It was raining (whereas the sun was shining in France.. Anyway.. No actually, it rained only this day). And we arrived at Nottingham after 4 hours of auto car. To resume, we slept in a nice bed & breakfast, not too much expensive and with authentic full English breakfast on morning ! And the day, we went to the campus by auto car to see some lectures : thermodynamics, mechanics, mathematics, quantum world, but also psychology, macro economy, politics etc. It is very interesting to see how the courses work in foreign university. Moreover you can discuss with many students and then compare with France.
The SCAN trip is also the discovery of the country (if you have never been here), you visit the city and its around. For example, we visited the castle of Nottingham and saw Robin Hood’s statue. We walked in the Wollaton park too and visited the natural history museum.
And night.. Night is great in Nottingham ! There are a lot of very nice pubs an club nights where you can easily speak with others.
Actually, it is a good experience to improve your knowledge, your English, to discover the country, and to have good times with friends 😉

Why do you have to chose London ?
First of all, London is the capital of UK. Imperial College is the equivalent of Ecole Polytechnique in UK so it’s interesting to compare both systems. The campus is lovely because it is near to Hyde Park.
We had two students at Imperial College to show us around the university and who invited us to a party the first day we arrived, a Tuesday. So we could create contact and have tips for our trip.
In other universities, they didn’t have these two students to help them, so they were like strangers in the university, not us.
In London, biggest museums are free so you can visit the morning and the afternoon and go out at night. As you can imagine, there are a lot of pubs, nightclubs with unbeliavable real Londoners ! You have to go there to understand what I’m saying. You can’t be bored !
Let’s talk about money. We got a flat in zone 1 for 15 pounds per day per person. It was an awesome flat with home-cinema, sofas, 2 bedrooms (for 6 persons), an american kitchen and a bathroom. We can send you the email adress of the landlord if you want ! Transports in London are quite expensive so you have to buy an travelcard (oyster card) for 2 weeks, it will cost 50 pounds but after that, London isn’t expensive. Food and beer prices are fine.
Don’t worry by the test at your return, it won’t be harder as usually and if you planned well your trip, it won’t be hard to catch up in tutorials : it is just one week.
And don’t forget, Olympic games will start the 26th of April !
